Japandroids – Local 506 – July 6

Vicious in their multiple amps and overwhelming sound, sweet in their buoyant pop-rock melodies, Vancouver’s Japandroids gave the Monday night crowd at Local 506 a big, bright 45-minute blast. Louder and more powerful than most guitar-drums duos come close to, it was a set full of quick catchy shots of rock that were endlessly entertaining. Fairly new local band Mount Weather took care of the opening duties. Wrapped up in the noisy fuzz of Sonic Youth, the band’s songs centered around well-focused melodies that the band steadily made work. Though it was never bad, it wasn’t too original and it often lacked in thrills. Still, for a band that never really plays filling an opening spot on a Monday night, the crowd at 506 could have done a lot worse.
