Bellafea – Pinhook – June 24

Impromptu planning at its finest, Wednesday night’s show at the Pinhook was an excellent serving of three terrific trios. Taking stage first, Austin post-punk trio Ume killed, layering roaring guitar lines on top of a cavalcade (you knew I’d have to use it somewhere) of pounding rhythm. Maple Stave‘s set was even more explosive. The mostly instrumental, completely math-y Durham trio assaulted the crowd with insane time signature changes. Last and also best, Chapel Hill’s Bellafea was on in its first Durham performance since last fall’s Troika. Laying it on thick with a well orchestrated tumult, the band allowed singer Heather McEntire to dig into the emotional fire of her affecting songs. Yay for shows on short notice.
