Usually it takes me a couple minutes to narrow down my three choices for mixtapes to spotlight, not this week. Big things. Real big.

The most hyped, anticipated, delayed release of the week came courtesy of DC artist Wale. His Back to the Feature was just that, a mixtape of features with some hip-hop heavyweights. His past two major mixtapes were both focused on Wale, but this go round it’s all about pure hip-hop. On top of that, 11 of the 22 tracks were produced by local legend 9th Wonder. Really need more incentives to listen to this besides a solid MC back by 9th on a go-go groove? Look at the cameos: Curren$y, UCB, Young Chris, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Lady Gaga, Joe Budden, Skyzoo, Talib Kweli, Joell Ortiz, Black Thought, Peedi Peedi, Tu Phace, Big Sean, (Dook student and favorite) Mike Posner, Ken Starr, Daniel Merriwhether, Torae, Kingpin Slim, Duffy, Memphis Bleek, J. Cole, Jean Grae, Royce Da 5’9″, Bun B, Dre, Peter, Bjorn and John, K’Naan and Yael Naim. I know, that’s a lot of names. But that’s the magnitude of it. Only downside – this tape took so long to come out seven, and in some cases the better of the 22, tracks leaked early. Oh well, deal with it. It’s good, free music.

What’s Good?: “Um Rikka” Feat. K’Naan, “Wonder Why” Feat. Big Sean, Mike Posner and Ken Starr (Produced by 9th Wonder), “Word Play” Feat. Curren$y and Tre of UCB

This tape hasn’t been hyped for as long, but it doesn’t mean just as many people haven’t been looking forward to it. B.o.B., or should I say Bobby Ray released his battle between monikers on Monday with B.o.B. vs. Bobby Ray. It’s divided into two parts, B.o.B.’s first half and Bobby Ray’s second. Pretty much like his Grand Hustle boss and ATL pal T.I.’s T.I vs. T.I.P. B.o.B. represents a much more grounded hip-hop approach, but Bobby Ray brings in a more progressive, Andre 3000-compared to, feel that will excite a little more. Both sides are great in their respective niches, which makes the whole tape amazing and a must not miss. I’ll admit I was looking more forward to Wale’s tape this week, but have listened to Bobby Ray’s much more.

Honestly, the only reason I even put a thrid tape on this week’s other tow mammoth releases is for consistency’s sake. If you have to have another tape though, Curt@!n$’ The Great Adventures of Dope Boy C: Dope for President! (great name) is a good bet. Curt@!n$ is enjoyable, talented and part of that new class I always talk about. He’s pretty much built up his own buzz via his High Society Life blog with fellow dope boys Torch and Odyssey. Also, a dope cameo with Tyrese? Yeah. How do those rappers say it. Don’t sleep.

What’s Good?: “Tomorrow” Feat. Tyrese, “3 Little Pigs,” “Wake Up!,”You Ignorant Bitch”

I know, you’re welcome.
