Yeah, I lied last week, the new B.o.B./Bobby Ray tape isn’t out yet, but it’s coming. As is Wale’s long awaited Back to the Feature project with 9th Wonder (that will feature K’naan, Royce Da 5’9″, Joell Ortiz, Black Thought, Joe Budden and Bun B) that drops on Friday. For real this time . The past seven days did, however, make up for a fairly slow releases from a week prior.

Not the biggest mixtape of the week – I’ll get to that in a second – but definitely the best. Fayette-nam (Fayetteville), NC product J. Cole breaks out a monster set of high-grade tracks, mind you with only one cameo, for a much anticipated tape. If you made it to the Wale show at Cat’s Cradle in April you would have been treated with a killer verse/freestyle from J. and the 22 songs continue the same trend. Wordplay reeps from every bar and his delivery is lazily menacing which somehow works. Besides his lyrical talent on display over classic Jay-Z, Souls of Mischief and Big Boi tracks, there’s brand new material to enjoy as well. The Warm Up is fucking awesome. J. Cole also proves that Jay-Z maybe isn’t the worse label executive in the world after signing J. to the Roc Nation imprint. Don’t sleep on this tape.

What’s Good?: “Grown Simba,” “Heartache,” “Hold It Down,” “Dead Presidents II”

Here’s, by name, the biggest release of the week. Mr. 50 Cent said the “mixtape” category was too little to harbor all the creative genius that is this tape, so instead it’s called the War Angel LP. Honestly, I’ve never been a huge 50 fan after his first album, but I ran through this and it’s not bad. It is predictable, but not bad. He takes some stabs at reworking ol’ Wu-Tang. Puts his latest leak “OK, Alright” on a release. Records a song called “Cocaine” with Robin Thicke. Really, 50’s last two albums were all-around worse than this.

What’s Good?: “OK, Alright,” “Talking in Codes,” “Cream 2009”

Sage pretty much came out of nowhere with this one. This is the 5th installment of Sage’s Sick of… mixtape series. This celebrates the 10th anniversary of the first tape in the series that also announced Sage’s arrival to the music scene. These tracks vary by completion date ranging from home recordings in 1996 to present day. It’s always nice to hear the progression of an artist. Also cool, read the stories behind each song at the Strange Famous Records website where you can buy a signed hard copy of the CD if you wish.

What’s Good?: “House of Bees” Feat. B. Dolan, “If I Go To Hell,” “Sea Legs” Feat. B. Dolan & Sleep

Enjoy guys, it was a good week.
