Holy Ghost Tent Revival – Local 506 – June 5

By rights, a band of the stature of Holy Ghost Tent Revival really shouldn’t be allowed to put on the kind of hour-and-a-half long tour de force it did Friday night. But in the case of HGTR, they’ve got the chops to make you forget their standing. Pumping out a sweat-drenched mix of folk, bluegrass and good ole rock ‘n’ roll, the group reverberated with intensity and precision. Opener Midtown Dickens was also great. The group, now a five-piece, delivered a much refined version of its country twee. And while terms like cute and endearing will always come to mind when watching them, the group has now earned its way into descriptors like professional and heart-breaking. Concord’s Paleface was also on hand, but the duo’s set was by far the worst. Delivering cliches without the intensity or the musical ingenuity to make it work, the whole thing came off as droll, needlessly thumping mess. Luckily, the two groups surrounding Paleface more than made up for the slump.
