Despite a week of vacation and slightly upsetting news, I’m back on the mixtape game weeding out all the impostors so none of you get your time wasted on a bunk release.

Alright, ol’ Bennett slipped one past ya. This free album Just a Game by the Ohio-native production duo isn’t a hip-hop release at all. The Kickdrums should, however, sound familiar to all those remix fans out there as their last tape, Smash the System, featured updates of Kanye West, The Notorious B.I.G. and Adele cuts. While it is normally not my place to be recommending non-hip-hop releases, The Kickdrums are a genre-creating production team that needs to be recognized by all.

What’s Good?: “Things Work Out” “Death of a Dream Mac”

Truck North had a fine introduction to mainstream hip-hop on The Roots’ “Criminal” and “Singing Man” off 2008’s Rising Down. A little over a year later, he’s dropping a new tape, Truck jewels, that rips old J Dilla production and mixes it with more Philladelphia flavor than a cheesesteak. Also, a pretty major guest list with Black Thought, Wale, ?uestlove and much more talent. Always respect a man that can hold his own over a Yancey beat.

What’s Good?: “Money Making Jam” Feat. Black Thought and Dice Raw “The Never Ending Flip”

After however long it took him to actually get there, T.I. has finally reported to federal prison to serve his sentance for weapons charges, but left a tape behind so we wouldn’t forget his good name. I have no problem with T.I., wouldn’t ever put him up there with the best, but he has found his niche and does well for himself in it. Most of the tracks off A Year and a Day leaked prior to the tape’s release, but it’s still a good collection of newer T.I. material that will satisfy if you’re over listening to Paper Trail.

What’s Good?: “On Top of the World” [Unreleased/Original] Feat. B.o.B. (now known as Bobby Ray) and Kanye West (verse off “Kinda Like a Big Deal” intended for this song) “Hell of a Life” “Still Ain’t Forgave Myself”

If none of those float your boat and you’re more of a throwback than a Mitchell & Ness, it was a good week for you. There’s a rip of Black Star’s NYC reunion show, a best of Bad Boy Radio freestyles from 1997-2007 that features the likes of Outkast, Q-Tip, DTP, Kanye West, Common, plus Shaq and Allen Iverson and my personal favorite two rewind moments of the week, courtesy of Trackstar the DJ who assembled a best of Wu-Tang members’ guest verses and also a circa 1992 disc called De La Remix that is 16 remixes of some classic Native Toungues clique.
