Roman Candle – Cat’s Cradle – May 9

Sometimes when you go see an outfit known for the talent of its singer’s songwriting, you get little more than a passionate and intimate rendering of the album material, little more than a live spin of songs you’ve heard that way a good many times before. With Roman Candle, however, this is most definitely not the case. Ripping through high-octane but still well-arranged versions of songs from its new album Oh Tall Tree in the Ear, the band was joined by an who’s who of local musicians including the Rosebuds’ Ivan Howard, the Old Ceremony’s Django Haskins and Thad Cockrell. Though producer Chris Stamey’s intricate guitar noodling that stood out the most of any of the guests, singer Skip Matheny was still clearly the star. He smiled, joked and winked his way through his songs while also spitting the lyrics with venomous power when necessary, giving the songs even more impact than they have on record. The band’s touring mates, Nasheville’s the Deep Vibration also played well. Ripping through a rockabilly set, the band chugged along with all the boozed glory of the early ’70s era Rolling Stones.
