Bowerbirds – Local 506 – May 8

It’s often easy to forget the raw power that the simplest, rawest emotion and music can inspire. Playing live, Raleigh’s Bowerbirds use a dark, rustic mix of folk music that explores the elemental, instinctual side of life with devastating results. Friday at Local 506 the band was in fine form coming off a two-week tour with La Strada as singer Phil Moore delivered his songs with easy passion. But while the other members of the line-up, buoyant Chapel Hill pop artist Wes Phillips and Brooklyn’s ornate violin-and-cello-powered pop outfit La Strada, played well, the three styles didn’t mesh together, giving the whole night a little bit of a disjointed feel. But it was easy to recover as each of the performers played well.
