Red Collar – Triangle Brewing Company, Durham – Mar. 14

With jobs left behind, a crowd made up of diehard fans as well as some of the band’s best friends and a killer new record ready for distribution, all the parts were in place Saturday for Red Collar to deliver one hell of a CD release party. The band did not disappoint. Taking over the warehouse at Durham’s Triangle Brewing Company in celebration of its first full-length Pilgrim, the band delivered an intense performance with a chugging engine of raging guitars and fist-pumping declarations that ran at full speed from start to finish. Lead-singer Jason Kutchma was as on-point as I’ve ever seen him, delivering his broken-hearted anthems about how life tries to stomp all over your dreams with the gusto only a man who has just thrown thrown out his nine to five to chase his own dream could muster. Fellow Durham rockers The Dry Heathens gave a typically spirited punk rock performance with the clear highlight being their cover of Red Collar’s “Witching Hour” in which the headlining act joined them on stage for uproarious sing-a-long. The Bones Royal, who is currently touring with Red Collar, opened the night with a comforting set of blues inspired rock that served as a soft introduction to what was an intense night of rock ‘n’ roll. If Red Collar, who is about to hit the road in support of Pilgrim could deliver a performance like that every night, it’s hard to believe they’ll have many copies of the record left when they return.
