Joe Romeo and the Orange County Volunteers – Local 506 – February 21

While the self-titled debut that was at the center of Saturday’s Local 506 celebration is a testament to the fact that Joe Romeo’s songwriting is more than polished enough to shine on record, the performance rendered by he and his band, the Orange County Volunteers, proved that his songs are truly at their best when they are given the emotional, high-energy treatment that the group brings to its live renditions. Blazing through the rockers and brooding through the slower numbers, the band, particularly the razor-sharp guitar lines of Scott McCall, propelled Romeo through a great set. Romeo sang with a deceptive confidence as he cracked hilariously awkward jokes between his heart-wrenching songs. Jeff Crawford was a great choice to open the show with a songwriting style that meshed well with Romeo’s. His set was a loose, relaxed way to warm people up for the thrilling main event.
