Pontiak and Tooth – Nightlight – Feb. 17

Tuesday night’s are not known for being nights of metal mayhem. More associated with discounted beers, sluggish crowds and rounds of bar trivia, the second night in the working week doesn’t usually contain kick-drum-and-sludge-fueled fun. Last night’s show at Nightlight put Tuesday in a different light. Durham purveyors of large, loud and evil metal Tooth and Virginia’s boozed-out rock ‘n’ roll sludge kings Pontiak assaulted the respectably-sized off-night crowd with sets that saw both bands on-top of their respective games. Tooth’s set was short, but gave the band plenty of time to lay down it’s constantly pummeling attack as singer JME Guptil ripped through his attention grabbing vocals. Touring trio Pontiak was a real treat as the band gave the sludge of peers such as Harvey Milk a shot of pure rock adrenaline as it utilized three-part vocals and catchy riffs to make its always interesting sonic textures truly entertaining. It sure beat the hell out of going to trivia.
