So, a new year is upon us, and with that comes a new lot of music to seek out and enjoy. After a few dull weeks, the first week of blockbuster releases is finally here.

Chief in the bunch is the proper-CD release of Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion. The record was released on vinyl a few weeks back and has been floating around the internet for about a month, so I’m not sure that anyone interested in hearing it hasn’t already done so, but it’s certainly worth your time. Also, check Dive today for a great review by Ben Pittard.

Also out is a solo record by A.C. Newman of the New Pornographers and an EP of new songs from Bon Iver, who you surely remember as one of 2008’s biggest breakout stars. Both of those releases deserve all the praise they’ve been getting.

Additionally, there are new records from Antony and the Johnsons, Andrew Bird and Matt and Kim. But, other than Animal Collective, if you have only $10 to spend and need to pick one album, go check out the new collection of ballads released by Mariah Carey. I mean that with all sincerity. Girl can sing. And we don’t want her having another nervous breakdown now do we?
