Astronautalis – Local 506 – Oct. 29

To call Astronautalis simply a rapper would be like saying that duct tape is only apt for repairing ventilation. Sure, he free-styled (and did so incredibly well, twisting together one hilarious episode about Sarah Palin, a zebra shoved in a blender and Friendster) and yes, most of his songs include rap elements, but the MC has far more skills than these. He also ripped through Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen inspired bar ballads laced with quick rap verses, pouring enough passion into his performances to make such instances as Revolutionary War battles and heresy trials seem entirely relevant to his audience. The cleverly potty-mouthed Juan Huevos and Kerbloki, whose dueling MCs are backed by the thundering rhythm section of metal band Caltrop, were both also on hand and delivered vivacious performances.
