Curtains Of Night – Local 506 – Oct. 3

I never buy ear plugs. I’ve always stubbornly (and stupidly) subscribed to the notion that wearing them takes away from the experience of a show and, more importantly, makes me look like a wuss. I however had no choice at the CD release for Curtains Of Nights’ Lost Houses. In the face of the aural assault from three area’s best metal bands I realized that it was either cough up the dollar the bartender demanded or go deaf. From Death Came Down The Mountain’s riff-heavy chops to In The Year Of The Pig’s overpowering combination of heavy drone and furious drumming (courtesy of Jenks Miller and David Cantwell, two of the area’s best) to Curtains Of Night’s monolithic mix of blackened riffs and propulsive drumming, it was a night so good and loud that no ear plugs could hold it back fully.
